Transition?
Like global economy, the mining industry appears to be going through a volatile phase. Fluctuating commodity market as well as mine closures, slow downs send contradictory signals for the professional and the investor. And this is the time of clean ups and review of the industry and the talk of stinulus plans underline the urgency. The mining industry is by nature has a long gestation period since the mineral deposit is planned for the life and uncertainity does not auger well even if the stagnation is temporary.

Responsible Mining
Responsible Mining is the latest catchword but how far it is sustainable? The trends indicate Nations looking for investment and bending some of the policies to attract investment and improving the infra structure and energy security. In the emerging scenario, with windfall taxes in place, tax regimes being revised and everyone wanting a better share, the vulnerable society is beginning to assert.
As is increasingly stressed, operations need to be transparent leaving a transparent and auditable trail and involve the local community who are always agitated more often justifiably about displacement and adequate resettlement. Information Technology chips in with new software meeting the increasing demands, when every activity is to be measured and analyzed.
The time has come for the application of wisdom to educate to meet the future demands. Are the attempts adequate?

Global Warming
Suddenly everybody starts talking about GLOBAL WARMING. When the prediction came long long back nobody thought that time is so close at hand and the effects will be seen in the same generation.
How nice it would be if persons qualified to talk and know what they are talking about, talk and let the decision makers make the decision and put it across to those who are affected.
We are talking about RESPONSIBLE MINING now but that is something the community is getting involved and the seriousness are there to see.
The future is not in rhetoric but lies with people with vision to act, despite resistance.
